How to Wear a Kashmiri Jacket Over a Saree

How to Wear a Kashmiri Jacket Over a Saree

A saree with a jacket on top is one of the most graceful ways to dress for cooler weather. It keeps you warm, and it also gives a plain saree a rich, finished look. If you have a Kashmiri jacket for women in your wardrobe and wonder how to wear it with a saree, this guide will help.

We use the Neel Shaam | MEHFIL jacket as our example. It is a blue long Kashmiri jacket in premium wool, with Kashmiri aari work on the front, neckline, sleeves, back and hem. It has full sleeves, front buttons and functional pockets, and comes in one size.

Why a Kashmiri jacket works over a saree

  • Warmth: A hand block print mulmul cotton saree is light and breathable. A wool jacket on top makes it wearable in colder months.
  • A ready-made statement: With a Kashmiri aari work jacket, you do not need heavy jewellery or an embroidered blouse.
  • Easy to repeat: One jacket can go with several sarees, so you get more outfits from one piece.

1. Wear it open over a simple saree

This is the easiest look. Drape your saree in your usual style, put on the jacket and leave the front buttons open. The embroidered front and hem frame the saree and the pleats stay visible.

Best for: Family dinners, festive evenings and small gatherings.

2. Pick a saree in a plain or softly printed fabric

Because the jacket has detailed aari work, choose a saree that is quieter. A Green Hand Block Print Pure Mulmul Cotton Saree or a Brick Color Hand Block Print Pure Mulmul Cotton Saree lets the jacket stand out, while the soft block print keeps the saree interesting.

3. Think about colour

  • Blue jacket (Neel Shaam): Looks good with warm shades like brick, and with neutral shades like cream, beige and grey.
  • Yellow jacket (Zar Shaam): Pairs well with deeper shades like green, maroon and navy.
  • Rule of thumb: If the jacket is bright, keep the saree calm. If the saree is bold, wear a more neutral jacket.

4. Handle the pallu carefully

A long jacket covers the back and sides of the saree, so decide how to manage           the pallu:

Over the jacket: Pin the pallu over one shoulder on top of the jacket, so the saree     and jacket are both seen. This is the most common way.

  • Under the jacket: Tuck the pallu neatly so only the jacket shows at the top. It gives a cleaner, more streamlined look.
  • Use a small pin to hold the pallu in place when you move.

5. Choose a blouse that keeps the look light

Wearing a jacket on top means the blouse is mostly hidden. Choose a simple, well-fitted blouse with a neckline that sits comfortably under the jacket's neckline. Avoid heavy sleeves, because they make it hard to wear the jacket with full sleeves.

6. Add a belt for shape (optional)

A long jacket can hide your waist. For a more defined look, close one or two buttons or add a slim belt over the jacket. Skip this if you prefer a relaxed, flowing style.

7. Keep jewellery and footwear simple

  • A pair of earrings and one bracelet are enough, since the embroidery is the focus.
  • Flat sandals or low heels work best with a saree and long jacket, so you can move comfortably.

Tips for choosing a Kashmiri jacket

  • Check the size chart images on the product page. Our jackets are one size, so make sure it suits you.
  • Look at where the embroidery sits. All-over aari work makes the jacket the star of the outfit.
  • Check the fabric. Premium wool is warm and suits winter
